My work on the Interiors of this project via Grange Home involved the development of an innovative approach to how we could bring elevated, enduring and equitable finishes to these eight homes while still managing the budgets that were more inline with lower end product.
Building harmony between the new families, their homes and the neighborhood was an important aspect of this project and crafting partnerships that extended budgets was essential in order to do so.
Utilizing donated sample lines we added a heightened sense of personalization to the project by designing individual spaces which utilized the one-of fixtures. One might argue that this created more work via labor to assort these individual designs. However, when you balanced the cost savings from donations vs the time spent designing Interior Finish Schedules, the savings came out on top.
Another example was our partnership with the Bay Area showroom of Daltile to bring their elevated products to the flooring and backsplashes via their generous donations of backstock--adding an additional layer of detail and sustainable, enduring functionality to the homes. Tile as a barrier to kitchen and bath wet areas and entryways might sound obvious but had been a missing component in past projects.
Finding ways of shifting our perspective on building systems that extend value, equity and sustainability as well as shifting products that may otherwise be bound for landfill was the guiding force behind our efforts. Designing award winning, BEAUTIFUL affordable home ownership opportunities that endure was an added benefit and one I'll proudly accept.
